Children’s Corps is a unique opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting vulnerable children, youth, and families impacted by the child welfare system. Members receive intensive training, support, competency development skills, with the goals of strengthening the child welfare workforce.
WHAT IS THE NEED?
In the United States today, too many children languish in foster care and many others are at risk of entering care due to neglect or abuse. Caseworkers play a critical role in maintaining the safety of children and ensuring their permanent family connections. The children that remain in care the longest are most likely to leave the system without a permanent family or adult connection. These youth have an increased risk of incarceration, homelessness, mental illness, and unemployment. These negative outcomes have implications for both children and society as a whole. A child’s chances for success are greatly increased when the professionals working with and for that child and their family are stable, consistent, and well trained. Children’s Corps helps to make this possible.
HOW DOES CC ADDRESS THE NEED?
Children Corps improves vulnerable children’s well-being and chances for success by building a workforce with highly skilled and dedicated workers who have potential to become leaders in the field. The program offers an employment opportunity for individuals who want to work with vulnerable children, youth and families. The Children’s Corps program partners with 15 New York City and Westchester Child Welfare agencies that employ members and provide them with a salary and benefits.
Children’s Corps effects change through a 3-pronged approach:
WHAT DOES CHILDREN'S CORPS DO?
Improving caseworker retention rates: The Children’s Corps average retention rate after one year is 81%, compared to the New York City foster care retention rate of 60% (as of 2011).
Improving opportunities and outcomes for children and families: Corps members are focused on supporting families and finding the best permanent solutions for children and youth in foster care. As Children’s Corps continues to expand, Corps members will touch the lives of thousands of children and families throughout New York City and beyond.
Creating future leaders in child welfare:
Children’s Corps alumni continue to effect change through a variety of professional tracks including policy, legal, clinical, social entrepreneurship, agency administration, and academia.
